Executive summary
This section addresses how organisations identify, process, communicate and improve their management of digital information. Learners begin by examining the types and sources of digital information and the systems used to manage it. They then study information processes — mapping how information currently flows, and evaluating and improving those processes. A strand on communication and knowledge sharing covers strategies, channels, and the use of IT systems as management tools. The section concludes with an integrated project in which learners assess an organisation’s digital information needs, map its processes, and propose and reflect on improvements.
Aims
The section aims to develop learners’ ability to treat information as a managed organisational asset. It builds their capacity to classify information needs, analyse and improve information processes, select effective communication and knowledge-sharing methods, and propose practical, IT-enabled improvements — supported by reflection on their impact.
Summary of learning outcomes
| LO1 | Understand digital information needs — the types and sources of information and the systems used to manage it. |
| LO2 | Understand and be able to map, evaluate and improve information processes. |
| LO3 | Understand communication and knowledge-sharing strategies and the role of IT systems as management tools. |
| LO4 | Be able to produce an integrated information management proposal based on assessed needs and process analysis. |
Indicative content
- Digital information needs: internal and external, tacit and explicit, qualitative and quantitative information; information systems (DMS, CRM); stakeholders and information flows; assessing an organisation’s information assets.
- Information processes: process mapping basics, symbols and examples; benefits and limitations; bottlenecks, errors and duplication; justifying improvements.
- Communication and knowledge sharing: formal and informal, written and oral, digital channels; using IT systems to collect, store and disseminate knowledge.
- Integrated project: needs assessment and process map; improvement proposal and reflection on impact.
Assessment approach
Understanding is reinforced through classification and selection quizzes (for example, classifying information examples or selecting the best communication method for a goal) and short-answer and activity tasks (such as drawing a process map or proposing IT improvements). The summative task (LO4) is a two-part upload: a digital information needs assessment with a process map, followed by an improvement plan with a reflection on its impact.
