Overview and aims
This unit gives learners a foundation in computer hardware, operating systems, and networking concepts, including an introduction to cloud technologies. It prepares learners for more advanced networking, systems administration and security units.
Aims:
- Introduce essential hardware, OS and networking concepts.
- Explain how networks are structured, addressed and secured at a basic level.
- Provide awareness of virtualisation and cloud computing.
Indicative content
- Computer architecture basics: CPU, memory, storage, I/O devices.
- Operating system fundamentals (user accounts, file systems, processes).
- Networking fundamentals: LAN/WAN, topologies, devices (switches, routers, APs).
- OSI and TCP/IP models, IP addressing and subnetting concepts.
- Introduction to virtualisation and cloud services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
- Basic network security considerations.
