Overview and aims
This unit extends Level 4 systems analysis into more complex systems and explores advanced modelling and design approaches. Learners examine different methodologies and evaluate system solutions in an organisational context.
Aims:
- Deepen understanding of systems analysis and design in complex environments.
- Develop proficiency in using advanced modelling techniques and tools.
- Enable evaluation of alternative designs and architectures.
Indicative content
- Review of SDLC and alternative methodologies (structured vs agile).
- Advanced requirements elicitation and prioritisation.
- Detailed process, data and interaction modelling (e.g. state diagrams, sequence diagrams).
- Architecture concepts (centralised, distributed, service‑oriented, cloud‑based).
Outcomes
Learners will be able to:
- Analyse complex organisational requirements for new or improved systems.
- Produce comprehensive system models and design specifications.
- Critically evaluate and justify proposed system designs.
Assessment
- Case‑study based design portfolio including requirements, models (DFDs/UML), and design justification report.
