Overview and aims
This unit develops learners’ skills in planning, configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting network information systems. It builds on Level 4 networking with focus on real‑world network design, services and security.
Aims:
- Extend knowledge of network architectures and services.
- Develop the ability to design and implement networks to meet organisational needs.
- Introduce monitoring, management and basic security of networked systems.
Indicative content
- Network design principles (topologies, addressing, routing, VLANs).
- Network services (DHCP, DNS, file and print services).
- Network operating systems and directory services.
- Basic network security, monitoring and troubleshooting.
Outcomes
Learners will be able to:
- Design network information systems for specified requirements.
- Configure and test network devices and services in a lab environment.
- Monitor, maintain and troubleshoot network issues at a basic–intermediate level.
Assessment
- Practical assignment using Packet Tracer and lab equipment: design and simulate a network, configure services, and produce a configuration and test report.
