Overview and aims
This unit develops an understanding of how information systems are analysed and designed to meet organisational needs. Learners explore the systems development life cycle, requirements gathering, and modelling techniques used to specify and design IT solutions.
Aims:
- Introduce systems development life cycle concepts and approaches.
- Enable learners to capture and document user requirements.
- Develop skills in modelling and specifying proposed IT systems.
Indicative content
- Role of information systems in organisations.
- Systems development life cycle (waterfall, iterative, agile overviews).
- Requirements elicitation: interviews, questionnaires, observation, and workshops.
- Requirements documentation: use cases, user stories, and requirements lists.
- Modelling: data flow diagrams, process models, entity–relationship diagrams, basic UML.
- Feasibility, basic cost/benefit and solution proposals.
