This unit explores how information systems support business processes, decision‑making and organisational performance. It focuses on understanding MIS types, their strategic role and how they can be designed or improved.
Aims:
- Provide understanding of the role and types of MIS in organisations.
- Develop ability to analyse, design and evaluate MIS solutions.
- Link information systems to strategic and operational decision‑making.
Indicative content
- Types of information systems (transaction processing, MIS, DSS, ESS).
- Information needs at different management levels.
- MIS design considerations and implementation issues.
- Evaluating MIS effectiveness and alignment with business strategy.
Outcomes
Learners will be able to:
- Explain the role and categories of MIS in organisations.
- Analyse existing MIS and identify strengths and weaknesses.
- Propose improvements or new MIS solutions to support business objectives.
Assessment
- Assignment: analysis of a real or simulated MIS, production of a report and design proposal (with optional dashboard/Excel artefacts).
